During the summer of 2000, the Olin family conquered the American Southwest, traveling to Colorado and New Mexico. Grandma Gloria joined us for the journey.
Tom had restored his vintage 1983 Ferrari 308 Quatrovalvole and entered it into the Ferrari Club of America 38th Annual Meeting and National Concours at the Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs, Colorado. There were almost four hundred Ferraris entered into the competition. Tom's good friend, and fellow car enthusiast, Bob Sackett, served as technical advisor and team photographer during the event.
All the hard work, polishing and pampering of that car paid off, as it won Platinum honors in its class (96 points). It even qualified for the prestigious Coppa Bella Machina award the following day. But alas, it was not to be, as gremlins caused a hydraulic hood strut failure during final judging.
While in Colorado, the Olin family climbed amidst the Garden of the Gods, visited the U.S. Olympic Training Center, and drove to the top of Pike's Peak. Then they turned south and headed into the Land of Enchantment.
Driving down Interstate 25, we entered New Mexico at Raton Pass. The kids collected a new state (requiring the obligatory state sign photo, of course). We took a detour into Taos, where we investigated the thousands-year old Taos Pueblo and renowned art colony.
Then on to the state capital, Santa Fe, where we toured America's oldest house, the San Miguel Chapel, and shopped for authentic hand-made indian jewelry and other artifacts. We concluded our adventure in Albuquerque. Laura celebrated her ninth birthday as we cruised Route 66 and gazed upon ancient petroglyphs in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains.
It was, indeed, an enchanting adventure!!
